College students are more likely to remember a statistical lecture when the professor includes relevant jokes about the topic.
Like many of the people who have attended my training sessions, Ann, a marketing vice president with a major firm, shared her personal horror story of trying, unsuccessfully, to start her presentation with a joke:
* * *
Ann: I tried to start with a joke once, and they didn’t laugh.
Coach: So what did you do?
Ann: I just went back to normal speaking and didn’t try to be funny. And I tried to cover up how embarrassed I was. But I’m not sure it worked.
Coach: One reason an audience doesn’t laugh, and this is normal, is because they don’t know you yet. They aren’t expecting you to be joking. They just don’t know how funny you are!
Comedians have a big advantage over the rest of us because we know they are comedians. Before they even say a word, we are expecting humor; we are ready to laugh. For the rest of us, it requires a little transition. This is especially true if you have a dry sense of humor. It takes at least a couple of references before people recognize and appreciate your style. You can’t lose confidence before that appreciation kicks in. Next time, either let them know that a joke is coming or just keep going with another one, and you will see a difference.
